Newcastle United are set to complete the signing of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham by the end of the week, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the newly promoted Premier League club are confident of tying up a deal for Abraham to move to St James’ Park on a season-long loan before he flies with the England Under-21s squad to Poland on Monday for the European Championships.

The Sun report that Newcastle have seen off competition from fellow new boys Brighton to land Abraham, who has just completed an exceptional season on loan at Bristol City.

It is said that the north-east giants will pay a loan fee for the 19-year-old forward as well as a considerable portion of his salary.

Manager Rafael Benitez is also aiming to recruit another forward to provide competition to Dwight Gayle, who is expected to be the first choice to spearhead the attack next season.

The signing of Abraham, who does not turn 20 until October, would represent a major coup for Rafael Benitez as he aims to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League next season.

Abraham scored 26 goals from 48 appearances in all competitions for City as he demonstrated the pedigree that have convinced Chelsea he could even eventually make the rare step of graduating from the club’s youth ranks into their first team.

The London-born youngster has yet to figure for the Blues’ senior team, although he has scored 13 goals in 29 games for the club’s Under-23s.

Abraham is in line to become Newcastle’s second summer signing following the recent arrival of winger Christian Atsu, who joined for a fee of around £6.2million from Chelsea.
