Newcastle are weighing up a summer swoop for Fenerbahce ace Martin Skrtel, according to a Fotomac report.

The Turkish media outlet claims the 32-year-old centre-back could be available for around £4.8million this summer.

It is also said Swansea have previously been linked with Skrtel, who is well acquainted with Magpies boss Rafa Bentiez from their time together at Liverpool.

Benitez brought Skrtel to Anfield in January 2008 from Zenit St Petersburg, and the player stayed there after the manager left the club in 2010.

The Slovakian defender went on to play 320 league and cup games for the Reds, 242 of which were in the Premier League, and he helped them to win the League Cup in 2011.

Skrtel left Anfield for Fenerbahce in the summer of 2016 in a £5million switch, and he went on to become a key player for the Turkish giants.

The 32-year-old was a mainstay of the club’s back line last term, making 49 appearances across all competitions.

Benitez is looking to bolster his defensive options ahead of his side’s return to the Premier League next season, and may see Skrtel as a bargain for a player with so much experience in the English top-flight already.

The no-nonsense defender has been capped by Slovakia on 88 occasions, and he played the full 90 minutes of the side’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Lithuania earlier this month.
