Newcastle United are convinced that they have won the race to sign Porto striker Vincent Aboubakar this summer, according to the Daily Express.

The newspaper claims that the newly-promoted Premier League side are confident of signing the 25-year-old who is valued at £9million and a deal could be finalised this week.

The striker was reportedly destined to sign for Ligue 1 side Rennes but the Tyneside club have hijacked the proposed deal as the French outfit were unable to meet his wage demands of £2.5million a year.

The Express reports that manager Rafa Benitez is preparing to sign eight new players in the summer transfer window as Newcastle prepare for life back in the Premier League next season.

Newcastle appear determined to sign a new striker ahead of the upcoming campaign as the Mail recently reported that the Magpies were looking to secure the signature of Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez.

Aboubakar enjoyed a successful season long loan spell with Turkish club Besiktas during the 2016-17 campaign, scoring 19 goals and providing four assists in all competitions.

The Cameroonian has proven himself on the European stage throughout his career, scoring nine goals in just 16 Champions League appearances.

The striker is currently on international duty with the Cameroon national team competing in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

The forward played the full 90 minutes as Chile beat Cameroon 2-0 in the opening match of the group on Sunday evening.

Aboubakar’s current contract with Porto expires at the end of next season.
