Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has cast doubt over his long-term future at the club by admitting he will “see what happens” this summer.

The 27-year-old full-back has struggled for regular first-team football in his preferred right-back role under Jose Mourinho, with the Portuguese preferring Antonio Valencia in the position.

But there were more regular opportunities available for the Italy international on the left flank, amid the ongoing struggles of £30million youngster Luke Shaw.

Darmian was handed 29 appearances in all competitions last season, of which just seven were in his preferred right-back role, including an impressive display in the Europa League Final win over Ajax.

However, as speculation continues to mount over Darmian’s long-term future at Old Trafford amid reported interest from several top European clubs, the player admits his future is unclear.

Speaking following Italy’s win over Uruguay on Wednesday, Darmian told the Daily Mail: “Surely this is not the moment to talk about the transfer market. I wouldn’t know what to answer.

“I have a contract at Manchester United, so let’s see what happens.”

The Mail claim Italian giants AC Milan, one of Darmian’s former clubs, are interested in a move for the defender this summer.

A report in the Sun, meanwhile, claims that rivals Inter Milan are also keen, and that Darmian had already begun his search for a new luxury home in the Italian city.

The player arrived at Manchester United from Torino in 2015 for a fee in excess of £12million, and still has two years left to run on his current contract.
