Everton manager Ronald Koeman has praised Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s attitude and admitted that the youngster “deserved to start matches last season”.

The 20-year-old was part of the England Under-20 national team who won the World Cup in South Korea this summer.

The youngster featured in every single match of the tournament and he scored two goals and provided two assists.

The striker turned out to be the England hero in the final against Venezuela as he scored the winning goal in the first-half to clinch the country’s first World Cup success at any level since 1966.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Koeman revealed that the youngster should have seen more minutes last season but mentioned that there is still more room for improvement in the upcoming campaign.

“He deserved to start matches last season and he is progressing well, but he needs to progress more because he is still only 20 years old,” he said.

“He can play in different positions up front. He’s really improving in his movement and finishing, and that makes him a first-team player.

“But he’s a good boy who is serious and has a phenomenal attitude, which is what we like.”

Calvert-Lewin signed for the Merseyside club from Championship side Sheffield United last summer for a fee just under £2million.

The Englishman spent the majority of his debut season watching on from the sidelines as teammate Romelu Lukaku was deployed up front and produced some brilliant performances.

The striker featured in 11 Premier League matches last season and he scored his first ever goal for the club in the 4-0 victory over Hull City at Goodison Park in March.

With the youngster performing well on the international stage, he is likely to see more action in the Everton first-team next season.
