Gary Lineker states Pickford fee was cheap

|

Popular Match of the Day host and former striker Gary Lineker has claimed that Everton have picked up a bargain in Jordan Pickford this summer.

The 23-year-old made the switch to Goodison Park from relegated club Sunderland earlier in the summer for an initial cost of £25million, which could then rise to £30million.

His fee was a cause of much debate with the cost making him the third most expensive goalkeeper in history alongside the most expensive British keeper of all time.

However, he had played a key role in England’s Under-21s team this summer and on Tuesday it was no different as he impressed spectators in the semi-final penalty defeat against Germany in Lithuania.

One watching fan was former Three Lions international Lineker, who simply posted on his personal Twitter account while watching the match “30 million quid? Cheap.” in clear reference to Pickford.

Pickford rose to fame with the Black Cats last season, breaking into David Moyes’ team by playing 29 times in the Premier League where he kept just four clean sheets while conceding 50 goals.

He will now be looking to make the number one shirt his own at Everton, who struggled with the goalkeeper position themselves last season with both Maarten Stekelenburg and Joel Robles failing to hold down a place in Ronald Koeman’s side.
