Everton midfielder James McCarthy is a summer transfer transfer target for both Stoke and West Brom, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim that the Premier League duo are looking to battle it out for the signature of the 26-year-old midfielder, who appears surplus to requirements at Goodison Park.

McCarthy has been plagued by injuries throughout his career in Merseyside, and was restricted to just 13 appearances in all competitions last season due to groin and hamstring problems.

But with Ronald Koeman looking to continue his overhaul of the first-team squad, McCarthy could be sacrificed from his increasingly-crowded midfield options.

Koeman offloaded Tom Cleverley in January to accommodate the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin, but Republic of Ireland international McCarthy could also be axed as Everton pursue further reinforcements this summer.

Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gueye, Tom Davies, and Gareth Barry are currently ahead of him in the pecking-order, while Everton will also be boosted by the return of Muhamed Besic from injury next season.

The Telegraph have also thrown a third Premier League name into the ring, with Newcastle claimed to be the most likely destination for the out-of-favour central midfield ace.

But although Newcastle could face competition in their bid to land McCarthy, it is clear that there would be no shortage of opportunities should Everton decide to cash-in this summer.

McCarthy joined the Toffees from Wigan in a £13million deal in September 2013, where he has since made 126 appearances in all competitions, contributing six goals and 10 assists.

His current deal at Everton runs until the summer of 2020.
