Costa ‘very close’ to moving to Atletico next January

Atletico Madrid are “very close” to securing a deal for Chelsea striker Diego Costa which would be completed in January 2018, according to an AS report.

The Spanish media outlet claims Antoine Griezmann will stay at the club next term, and his presence could be key in attracting Costa back to his former club.

It is said Sevilla winger Vitolo and Malaga striker Sandro are also “very close” to sealing a January 2018 move to Los Colchoneros.

Costa plied his trade at Vicente Calderón Stadium for five seasons between 2007 and 2012, and he played more than 130 games for the club, scoring 64 goals.

The 28-year-old left Atletico in the summer of 2014 when he signed for Chelsea for £32million, and he has since become a mainstay of the side and has made the striker’s spot his own.

The Spaniard has been unsettled since this January amid interest from several Chinese clubs, but he still managed to bag 20 goals in 35 Premier League games this term.

His goals helped the Blues to win the Premier League title in manager Antonio Conte’s first season in charge, as well as reaching the final of the FA Cup.

Costa has been capped by Spain 15 times, scoring five goals, and he last appeared in a World Cup qualifier against Israel in March of this year, which his side won 4-1.
