Goalkeeper Willy Caballero would prefer to join Premier League champions Chelsea rather than newly-promoted Newcastle United in the summer, according to the Times.

The report claims that the 35-year-old goalkeeper, who will be a free agent, has been presented with offers from both Premier League sides but would prefer a move to London.

Chelsea are reportedly interested in making Caballero their second choice goalkeeper behind Belgian Thibaut Courtois, after selling last season’s back-up keeper Asmir Begovic to fellow Premier League side Bournemouth.

The Times also claimed that the Magpies have currently ended their pursuit in former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina as they believe that the asking price from Napoli is too high.

Caballero has spent the majority of his career in the Premier League as a back-up goalkeeper since moving to Manchester City from La Liga side Malaga in 2014.

For his first two seasons at the Etihad, the Spanish goalkeeper had to play second fiddle to England international Joe Hart, but he turned out to be the hero in the 2016 Carling Cup final against Liverpool as he saved three penalties in the shootout to secure victory for City.

The Spaniard enjoyed much more minutes on the pitch last season as he made 17 Premier League appearances and kept seven clean sheets.

The Manchester club decided to release Caballero at the end of the season.
