European giants PSV Eindhoven have opened talks with Chelsea over a potential deal to sign Marco van Ginkel, according to the Standard.

The newspaper claim that the Dutch outfit are keen to acquire the 24-year-old midfielder on a permanent deal, following a successful loan spell at the club during the 2016-17 season.

Van Ginkel moved to Chelsea in 2013 but has struggled to break into the first-team setup, and has been restricted to just four senior appearances.

It is understood that the defending Premier League champions are willing to negotiate a deal to allow the Dutch player to leave the club this summer, as is not likely to play a key role at Stamford Bridge next term.

The Blues have slapped a £10million asking-price on the six-time Holland international, but PSV are hoping that they can negotiate a cut-price deal.

Talks between the two clubs are only in the preliminary stages, although PSV will be buoyed by their successful previous dealings with Chelsea, including the purchase of Jeffrey Bruma in 2013.

The current Werder Bremen star had returned to his native Holland for around £2.3million, with the deal including a significant sell-on clause option for the Blues which has since handed the club an extra £3.6million.

PSV want to negotiate a similar deal to sign van Ginkel this summer, which could see them snap up him up for a much lower fee than his reported eight-figure valuation.

Van Ginkel also spent time on loan at PSV during the 2015-16 season, and has made a combined 31 appearances for the club, contributing an impressive 15 goals and five assists.
