Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has offered Freddie Woodman and Adam Armstrong congratulations after they won the Under-20s World Cup with England.

The Spanish boss also hinted that the young pair could be a part of his first team plans next term, despite the fact both players were loaned out for the 2016/17 season.

England won the cup after beating Venezuela in the final 1-0 on Sunday, thanks to a goal from Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

However, he was not the only star of the show, as Woodman had to be alert to make a fine penalty save in the second half to preserve his side’s lead.

Writing in a blog post on his personal website, Benitez said: “England has just won the U-20 World Cup Tournament in South Korea. Congratulations to everyone for a great achievement, but especially to two of our players, Freddie Woodman and Adam Armstrong, both part of the England team.

“It has been a fantastic experience for their development. Let’s enjoy it for a while and be sure you will be ready for the next season. C’mon, Toons!!!”

Woodman, 20, was a mainstay of the young Three Lions side, playing the full 90 minutes in all but one of their seven World Cup games.

Meanwhile, Armstrong, 20, featured in four of his nation’s matches, scoring once in 3-0 win against Argentina.

Woodman spent the second half of the 2016/17 campaign in Scotland on loan at Kilmarnock, where he played 15 league and cup games.

However, he also impressed for Newcastle Under-23s in the first part of the season, and made 11 Premier League 2 appearances.

In contrast, Armstrong spent the entirety of last term on loan at Barnsley, where he was one of the club’s top performers, scoring six goals in 36 Championship outings, as well as providing four assists.
