Celtic midfielder Scott Brown has taken a swipe at Tottenham’s Harry Kane following Scotland’s 2-2 draw with England on Saturday.

The two players went head-to-head for their respective nations in the latest round of World Cup qualifiers at Hampden Park, where a last-minute winner from 23-year-old Kane rescued a point for the visitors.

Kane, who has just six goals from 18 senior international appearances, had not scored an international goal since May last year, and declared his intention ahead of the game to end his drought with a hat-trick against Scotland.

But after Kane failed to meet his pre-match target, Celtic and Scotland star Brown took to his personal Instagram account to sarcastically congratulate his Tottenham rival for scoring his hat-trick.

He said: “Bit unlucky the day. Good to see Harry Kane scored his hat-trick.”

Despite his prolonged international drought, Kane went into the clash on the back of a run of red-hot goalscoring form, where he netted eight goals from only his final three Premier League games last season.

The Tottenham star finished with an impressive haul of 35 goals from 38 appearances in all competitions, including five hat-tricks.

But before England’s trip to Scotland, Kane had said, as quoted by Scottish Sun: “I would love to score on Saturday and get that feeling again. Five in 17 isn’t a terrible record, but it is something I want to improve on, starting at the weekend.

“Hopefully I can get a couple, maybe three of four, and get back on that scoresheet. If I score a hat-trick at the weekend, and a couple in the next game, the ratio might not look so bad.”

The stalemate means England now hold just a two-point lead at the top of their World Cup qualifying group, while Scotland remain in fourth-place.

Celtic goalscorer Leigh Griffiths was twice on the scoresheet for the host with two brilliant free-kicks, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opening the scoring for England.
