Manchester United will only consider selling midfielder Ander Herrera for a fee in excess of £60million amid interest from Barcelona, according to the Independent.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Reds are reluctant to let the Spanish central midfielder depart Old Trafford and would demand a huge fee to even consider his transfer.

The news comes after Spanish newspaper Sport claimed that Catalan giants Barcelona were lining the 27-year-old up as a potential £35million signing if they failed to pull off a deal for PSG’s Marco Verratti.

Herrera, who was voted as United’s player of the year for his performances last season, only has a year left on his contract, although the club have the option to activate a one-year extension clause.

The two-time-capped Spanish international has established himself as one of the club’s top stars, having made 122 appearances, scoring 15 goals and notching up 22 assists since his £29million arrival from Athletic Bilbao, and is said to be viewed as a potential future captain.

A move to Barcelona would reunite Herrera with former boss Ernesto Valverde, who managed him for a solitary season before his move from Spain to England.

Last season the midfielder helped United to League Cup and Europa League success, with that coming Champions League qualification, having made 50 appearances across all competitions.
