Ray Wilkins is convinced that Chelsea defender John Terry would be an “absolutely incredible” signing for Aston Villa.

Speculation has been rife in recent weeks that five-time Premier League winner Terry will be joining the Championship side when his contract at Stamford Bridge expires at the end of this month.

The Independent have claimed that Villa are pushing to get a deal done for the 36-year-old, who will become a free-agent on July 1.

Following their bottom half finish during the previous campaign, Bruce has been set the minimum task of helping Villa earn promotion during the 2017/18 Championship season.

TV pundit Wilkins, who worked with Terry during his time at Chelsea, firmly believes he would be a great addition to Bruce’s side if they can land his signature.

“I think it could be a great move for him,” Wilkins told talkSPORT. “Steve is looking beyond the playing side for John, obviously taking a step down into that division, he would cope with that no problem.

“But to have him around the place and the experience he will also bring into the dressing room will be absolutely incredible.

“Steve is not just buying him for the playing ability, he’s buying him for the person and that’s vitally important if Steve is going to bring that club back.”

Former England captain Terry is regarded as one of the best centre-backs to have graced the Premier League, with the experienced player making 690 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea.

During his time at the club, he won the Premier League trophy on five occasions, five FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League.

If he were to make a switch to the Midlands this summer then he would most likely partner Wales international James Chester at the heart of the club’s defence.
