After narrowly missing out on a top-six finish during the recently concluded Championship campaign, there is no doubt that Leeds fans will be eager for another promotion charge next term.

Garry Monk’s departure from Elland Road last month is a big blow to the club but the next person in the hot seat will have high expectations to deal with.

This is Futbol looks at three teams who will be Leeds’ biggest threat as they aim to go one better in the Championship next season.

Aston Villa – They were the big spenders in the Championship last summer which resulted in them finishing in the bottom half. However, with manager Steve Bruce, who joined the club last October, now able to prepare with a pre-season, it will definitely make the Midlands outfit a dangerous opposition. Added with that, they could go on a spending spree once again which could further enhance their chances of promotion.

Middlesbrough – The recently relegated Premier League club appointed Monk as manager on Friday and the highly-rated coach proved with Leeds that he can mount a promotion challenge. His style of play will suit Boro added with the fact that he will make the north east club difficult to beat.

Sheffield Wednesday –  Carlos Carvalhal’s side have suffered play-off heartache for two seasons running in the Championship. They were beaten in the play-off finals in 2016 and were knocked out at the semi-final stages this term. However, Carvalhal has proven that he has an established squad in Yorkshire, and just like last season, his team could secure a top-six spot at the expense of Leeds.
