Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is the second most likely player to join Aston Villa in the summer transfer window, according to a report.

Sky Sports’ transfer section regularly plugs its Football Whispers, which claimed on Thursday evening that the left-back, 21, is the second likeliest Villa Park arrival.

Only Anderlecht attacking midfielder Alexandru Chipciu is regarded as more likely than Shaw to join Steve Bruce’s squad in the forthcoming window.

The defender joined United from Southampton for £30million in the summer of 2014 but he has not made the impact that the Premier League giants would have hoped.

He has struggled to accumulate a consistent run of matches due to a series of serious injuries as well as mixed form, and was savagely criticism by manager Jose Mourinho on multiple occasions in the recently completed season.

Football Whispers, which gathers all transfer rumours across the globe and calculates the likelihood of them happening, rates it 1.4 out of 5 that Chipciu will join Villa, with five the highest possible ranking and meaning it is a certainty.

The Romania international is narrowly ahead in the ratings of Shaw, who has a rating of 1.2, and Fleetwood centre-back Cian Bolger, who is also rated at 1.2 to transfer to the Midlands giants this summer.

Shaw ended the season with a foot injury and was forced to wear a protective boot during United’s Europa League triumph after Mourinho had questioned the seriousness of the problem.
