Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal has revealed that the players told him to stay at the club at the end of the season.

The Yorkshire outfit, who finished in the top-six during the recently concluded Championship campaign, suffered play-off heartache for the second season running.

In 2016, they were beaten in the play-off finals by Steve Bruce’s Hull City when Mo Diame’s long-range effort was enough to help the Tigers seal promotion to the Premier League.

After another consistent season in the second tier of English football, they found themselves entering the play-off’s once again, but this time, they suffered penalty shoot-out heartache against their neighbours, Huddersfield Town.

Despite that, Carvalhal revealed that the support of his players and the fans have made him continue on at the club for another season.

“When the season was over, I saw most of the fans asking me to stay, and the captain knocked on the door on the last day saying the players wanted me to stay,” said Carvalhal, as quoted by the Star.

“I did not let the rumours grow and I renewed. The desire to train the Premier League is no greater than training a club that I like and where they like me, where they sing my name, where players like to work with me, and this is priceless.”

Wednesday will be one of the favourites to seal promotion to the top tier of English football next term, with the fixture list set to be announced on Wednesday morning.

During the previous campaign, they opened their account in fine style when they beat Midlands outfit Aston Villa 1-0 in front of their own supporters.

Now, they will be hoping to beat the likes of Villa, Derby, Leeds and Sunderland to a top-two or top-six spot next term.
