Newcastle remain interested in signing long-term target and former winger Andros Townsend, according to the Chronicle.

The 25-year-old current Crystal Palace attacker was heavily linked to a return to the north east throughout the January window after leaving for London and the Premier League in a £13million deal last summer.

But, now with Newcastle having won promotion back to England’s top-flight alongside the departure of experienced manager Sam Allardyce it is detailed that the north east giants will keep their eye on the situation of Townsend.

The former Tottenham man was clearly shocked by the departure of Allardyce after he kept them in the Premier League this season and after the news broke he simply posted on his personal Twitter account “wow.”

The Twitter message also prompted the Newcastle supporters to come out in their numbers and urge the attacker to make his return to the north east, so it is clear that fans want to see Townsend back in their club shirt.

Townsend originally joined Newcastle in January 2016 for a £12million fee from Tottenham.

He was unable to keep Rafa Benitez’ men in the Premier League despite returning four goals and two assists in 13 top-flight appearances for the club.

The 13-time capped England international did however help Palace survive this season with three goals and six assists in 36 league outings.

Benitez will now be looking for players who he feels can help his own team stay in the Premier League next season and the Chronicle reports that both Townsend and Benitez retain a positive relationship.
