Manager Rafa Benitez is ready to offer Eliaquim Mangala a lifeline and take him to Newcastle, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The local news outlet claims that Manchester City want to find a permanent buyer for the defender this summer, with the Magpies ready to challenge one of Benitez’ former clubs and La Liga giants Valencia.

The report details that last summer appointment Pep Guardiola has made it clear that Mangala is not part of his future plans as he looks to overhaul his squad in the upcoming window after missing out on the Premier League title.

It is further claimed that Benitez wants Toon owner Mike Ashley to hand him the funds to re-establish the north east giants as a force in the Premier League after winning the Championship last season.

Mangala, 26, joined City three years again in the summer of 2014 for a reported fee of £42million from Portuguese giants Porto.

However, last season he spent the campaign on loan at Valencia and it is detailed by the Manchester Evening News that Mangala can be picked up at a fraction of his original cost.

The powerful defender has played in 64 matches in all competitions for Manchester City since his move with 48 of those appearances coming in the Premier League and he would add some top-flight experience to Newcastle.
