Alan Shearer believes that Tottenham’s business last summer has cost them during the season, but recognises the club have continued to make progress.

Spurs look set for a second-placed finish in the Premier League and watched rivals Chelsea clinch the title on Friday night at West From.

The north London club have a historic match on Sunday at home to Manchester United as they play their last ever game at White Hart Lane.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be keen for a big send off, but their top-four status is now assured and their season is pretty much finished.

They managed to push Chelsea to the closing weeks in the title race, but fell just short of Antonio Conte’s side.

Shearer claims that the club’s summer signings have failed to make an inversion and that was a major failure for the year.

“They have shown improvement again,” Shearer told betting company Coral, as cited by their official Twitter account. “They now have to go that one step further and keep that team together.

“I think where Tottenham failed this year was in the transfer market where their signings in the summer haven’t worked, but if they can keep the vast majority of their big names together then they have to go that one step further now.”

Spurs recruited defensive midfielder Victor Wanyama from Southampton and he has certainly been the biggest success out of the summer recruits.

The 25-year-old has established himself in the starting line-up and is a big favourite under Pochettino.

However, the rest of the summer buys have really struggled to make an impact or face their way into the side on a regular basis.

Moussa Sissoko has disappointed since his £30million deadline-day move from Newcastle, while young winger Georges-Kevin N’Koudou has barely got a look in since his £11million arrival from Marseille.

Spurs forward Vincent Janssen is another that has been disappointing and has come under the spotlight for his struggles in front of goal.

The 22-year-old striker was meant to be provide extra attacking support to the side, but he has just six goals following his £17million move from AZ Alkmaar.
