Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill has stated that he is not “surprised” that Celtic want to sign Aberdeen playmaker Jonny Hayes.

The Scottish Sun claimed on Monday that Bhoys manager Brendan Rodgers is plotting a summer move for the 29-year-old midfielder.

Dublin-born Hayes recently concluded an outstanding campaign for the Dons, with the highly-rated player assisting 19 goals during his side’s Scottish Premiership campaign.

Although Celtic ran away with the title, Derek McIness’ team finished a respectable second and accumulated 79 points during their season.

Former treble-winning manager O’Neill has been impressed with what Hayes has brought to the table this term and he can see why Rodgers is looking to snap up the top-flight assist machine.

“I wouldn’t really be surprised by Celtic’s interest because he gives you something,” said O’Neill, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“He wants to take players on, he wants to go for it and that’s encouraging. He has been a star man for Aberdeen for the whole season. His attitude is really top class and good luck to him.”

Over the course of the season, Hayes played 44 matches for his side, scoring 11 goals and supplying 24 assists in all competitions.

If he were to make a switch to Parkhead in the summer then he would join a team that has just completed the domestic treble.

In his first season in charge in Glasgow, Rodgers helped Celtic win the Scottish Premiership, Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup.

Added to that, they remained unbeaten throughout the campaign and dropped points on only four occasions.

Versatile midfielder Hayes scored against Celtic last Saturday as they lifted the Scottish Cup by scoring a late winner at Hampden.
