Club legend Frank McAvennie has urged Celtic to ‘get hold of’ talented Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts.

The 20-year-old has drawn the plaudits with a series of impressive displays during his time at the Scottish club over the last two seasons.

Roberts moved to Celtic on an 18-month loan spell in January 2016, but is set to return to Premier League giants Manchester City at the end of the season.

He has scored 17 goals and supplied 21 assists from his 59 appearances in all competitions since arriving in Scotland.

But he could be set to make his final appearance for the club when Celtic take on Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final at Hampden on Saturday.

McAvennie, who enjoyed two spells at Celtic, believes Roberts is a ‘magnificent’ talent, and has urged the Hoops to snap him up on an extended deal.

He told the Scottish Sun: “They need to get hold of the boy Roberts. He is f***ing magnificent. The things he does with the ball, the way he plays…you don’t see players like that in today’s game.

“Against Partick Thistle the other week there he was different class. Some of the stuff he does get you out of your seat.

“I’m not sure there are many players in Britain who can do that – make you stand up – let alone Scotland.”

Roberts will be assessed first-hand by City boss Pep Guardiola for the first time upon his imminent return to the Etihad.

The Spaniard is happy to put his faith in youngsters, having handed Leroy Sane and John Stones regularly roles in his squad this term.

But it remains to be seen if Guardiola will have a key role in mind for Roberts, with the England winger set to compete with fellow internationals Sane and Raheem Sterling for starting berth.

There is no doubt that Celtic fans would share McAvennie’s view, and would be unanimously favour of Roberts returning to the club for another spell.
