Manchester United are firmly interested in signing Tottenham ace Eric Dier, according to a report.

The Daily Mirror claim that United want to test Spurs’ resolve for the 23-year-old with a £40million bid in the summer.

It is understood that Mourinho believes the mega-money bid would be enough to sign the England international, despite him only agreeing a five-year deal last September worth £50,000-a-week.

The report details that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is reluctant to lose any key players in the summer, with the likes of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose also targeted.

Levy has warned that players can’t expect pay rises despite their strong performances this season, but it’s believed many of their stars could earn more away from White Hart Lane.

Dier completed a £4million move to White Hart Lane in 2014 and Spurs could be offered the chance to sell him on for 10 times his original fee.

The versatile player has switched between defence and midfielder during his time at the north London club, making him a crucial member of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

He is recognised as a defensive midfielder by trade and played in that position for England in the European Championships.

However, has he bas frequently been used in a three-man defence this season and helped Spurs boast the best defensive record in the division.

Dier has racked up 132 appearances so far for Spurs and is part of a strong English core in Pochettino’s line-up.
