Tottenham star Harry Kane could be named as England captain to face Scotland next month, according to The Times.

The newspaper claim that the Tottenham 23-year-old is one of four potential candidates fighting for the captaincy, as England manager Gareth Southgate looks set to drop Wayne Rooney from his squad.

Rooney is the current England captain, having been appointed in the role by former chief Roy Hodgson in 2014, but after a lack of appearances for Manchester United this season, his duties appear all but over.

The attacker is set to be axed by Southgate for next month’s international double-header against Scotland and France, paving the way for a new captain.

The Times reports that Southgate is ready to consider one of Kane, Gary Cahill, Joe Hart and Jordan Henderson to lead his side for the upcoming World Cup qualifier with Scotland on June 10.

The England captaincy would be a deserved reward for Kane after a brilliant season in the Premier League with Tottenham.

Kane scored an incredible 29 goals from just 30 league appearances during the 2016-17 campaign, as Tottenham secured a second-placed finish in the Premier League, and qualification for the Champions League.

His goalscoring exploits earned him the Premier League Golden Boot award for the second successive season, having netted 25 goals the previous year.

However, Kane had been trailing Everton’s Romelu Lukaku by two goals ahead of the final two league games of the season, only for the Tottenham star to hit the back of the net seven times to run away with the award.

He put four goals past Leicester during a 6-1 away victory on Thursday, before netting his fifth hat-trick of the season in a stunning 7-1 romp over Hull on Sunday.
