Former Scotland international midfielder Don Hutchison has told that he believes Newcastle need to add a player who will excite fans this summer and has specifically mentioned the winger position.

The Magpies have made an instant return to England’s top-flight after suffering relegation in 2016 following their league title win.

They are now on the lookout for players who they feel can help them retain their Premier League status and the club have already confirmed the signing of winger Christian Atsu from Chelsea following his loan move last season.

Now, Hutchison believes that a further wide player to add to Atsu would open up some “exciting possibilities” and has also told that it “would be great” to see them add a further attacker to their team.

“I’ve been saying for some time the club needs to make the sort of signing that will excite the fans, and do it early,” wrote Hutchison in his column for the Chronicle.

“The news that Rafa is in the market for more wingers even after Atsu’s arrival opens up some exciting possibilities. Newcastle teams have been built on wingers like Chris Waddle and David Ginola who can lift the fans off their seats, and it would be great to see them get another.”

Newcastle were heavily linked with signing a winger in January and former man Andros Townsend and Swansea’s Modou Barrow were the most speculated at making the move to the north east giants.

However, neither player joined Rafa Benitez’ side, leaving the Spaniard with Matt Ritchie, Yoan Gouffran and Atsu as their only wide options.

It is now felt that a lot of strengthening is needed this summer if the Magpies are to reach Premier League survival in the next campaign.
