Newcastle are in the running to sign Tottenham attacker Moussa Sissoko, according to the latest betting odds.

Leading bookmaker Ladbrokes have priced the 27-year-old at 4/1 to make a sensational return to St James’ Park before September 3, with Marseille favourites for his signature at a price of 3/1.

The France international moved to White Hart Lane last summer from Newcastle when the London club paid a big-money fee of £30million for his services.

However, he struggled during his time at the club, failing to score a goal all season long, despite Mauricio Pochettino’s side finishing the Premier League campaign as runners-up.

It is highly likely that Sissoko will now leave the club following his comments to the print edition of French newspaper L’Equipe on Tuesday (page 5), which were quoted by the London Evening Standard.

“I don’t think [the fee] will be a problem,” said Sissoko. “They know I am no longer a kid: I am 27 and I need to get to the World Cup. If a situation arrives where I can leave, I hope they don’t cause problems.

“Everyone knows that I would prefer to stay in England but I have not closed the door on other leagues.”

Judging by his comments, Sissoko clearly has his eyes set on playing regular football so he can represent his home country at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Added to that, there is no doubt that Sissoko wants to be playing top-flight football with Newcastle recently earning promotion to the Premier League.

When Sissoko left the north-east club last summer, they had just suffered relegation to the Championship but under the stewardship of Rafa Benitez, they bounced straight back up.

Sissoko’s current deal at Tottenham is due to expire in 2021. He played 34 matches in all competitions for Spurs this term, contributing to only four assists.
