French outfit Marseille have stepped up their interest in Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny, according to a report in the Sun.

The newspaper claims the 31-year-old is Marseille’s number one target this summer as they look to bolster their squad ahead of a push for the Ligue 1 title next season.

It is said they have “sounded out” the Frenchman’s interest in a potential return to his country of birth.

The report states it could take a bid in excess of £30million to prise the experienced centre-back away from the Emirates, where his current contract still has three years to run.

Koscielny has been a mainstay of the Gunners’ defence this term, making 43 league and cup appearances.

Arsenal will miss out on Champions League football next season after finishing fifth in the Premier League.

However, Arsene Wenger’s side did guide his club to a third FA Cup in four seasons on Saturday as they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final at Wembley.

Koscielny did not appear in the cup final as he was serving a suspension for a red card he received against Everton in the final Premier League match of the 2016/17 campaign.

The Gunners signed the 44-time France international from Lorient in the summer of 2010 for £10million and he has since made 291 appearances in competitions for the club.
