Celtic have opened the door to a potential summer move for Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, according to The Gambling Times.

The betting-based news site report that the Scottish club have ‘made it clear’ to Rooney’s representatives that they would be able to accommodate the 31-year-old, should he seek out a move to Parkhead.

Rooney has just one year left to run on his current contract at Old Trafford, but he could leave this summer having fallen out-of-favour under Jose Mourinho.

The England international started just 25 of his 39 appearances in all competitions last season, while he only completed the full 90 minutes on 13 occasions.

But the report also states that a move back to Everton remains the ‘favoured option’ for Rooney, who has confirmed he is looking for first-team football next season.

The Mirror state that Rooney is currently earning a deal worth £300,000-per-week at Manchester United, and is also on the radar of Premier League rivals Stoke City.

But it would come as a considerable shock if Celtic were to pull out the financial stops to bring him to the club this summer.

Rooney has previously admitted to have followed Celtic as a youngster, but despite his admiration for the club, the move seems unrealistic as he would have to take a significant pay-cut to move to Scotland.

He also has offers on the table from both the Chinese Super League and Major League Soccer, who would both be able to meet his lucrative demands.
