Arsenal legend Martin Keown has claimed Wayne Rooney should return to Everton in order to reignite his career.

Despite still being club captain at Manchester United, Rooney has become a bit-part player since Jose Mourinho was named as manager of the club last summer.

The 31-year-old only scored eight goals in 39 league and cup appearances in the 2016-17 campaign, and started just 15 Premier League matches.

The Daily Mail have previously claimed he was keen on a return to his former club, with his astronomical wages being the only sticking point.

However a concrete bid is yet to materialise, and the striker is still under contract at Old Trafford until 2019.

Keown has claimed that the Toffees are still a good fit for the 31-year-old and urged both parties to seal what would be a romantic and sensational transfer .

Writing in his Tackle Keown column on the Daily Mail, the pundit said: “If he returned [to Everton], everyone would be wearing Rooney shirts overnight!

“Rooney is still good enough to achieve things at Everton. It is clear Rooney still has unfinished business. By coming home and playing under the guidance of an excellent manager, Rooney can prove to Mourinho that he was wrong to leave him out at Manchester United.”

Rooney played just one minute of the Europa League final on Wednesday night as his side beat Ajax 2-0 at Stockholm’s Friends Arena.

The result meant Mourinho secured a cup double in his first season as United manager, having won the League Cup earlier this campaign.

Rooney boasts a glittering CV and has now won every club honour available to him, and he has made more than 550 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, scoring 253 goals.

The 31-year-old is also an 119-time England international.
