Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has insisted that players will not necessarily receive improved contracts after their performances this season.

Levy’s financial decision may shock some of the Spurs players that feel they should be earning more, with defender Toby Alderweireld reportedly stalling on a new contract as he demands the same amount as top earner Harry Kane on £110,000-a-week.

Spurs have been competing for the Premier League title this campaign and are viewed as one of the best sides at White Hart Lane in recent memory.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has managed to build a formidable squad and they look set for a second-placed league finish, with leaders Chelsea just one victory away from the title.

The north London club have managed to outperform the majority of their rivals despite having a lower wage budget and most believe they need to break their policy if they are to win the title in the future.

Levy, who is known as a shrewd businessman, recently attended a meeting between the board and members and was asked about players’ contracts.

“DL [Levy] said all players were under contracts, contracts they were happy to sign at the time,” minutes from the meeting said, as quoted by the Evening Standard. “They would be expected to honour those contracts. They wouldn’t have had a reduction if things had gone badly.

“DL said no player would be sold who Tottenham didn’t want to sell for non-footballing reasons.”

Levy raised the points that salaries would not have been dropped if Spurs had suffered a poor campaign, meaning they shall not be raised for a good one.

Pochettino’s side are fast establishing themselves at the top-end of English football after a number of strong seasons, but their failure in Europe suggests they still have some improvement to do.
