Leeds face tough competition for the signature of Victoria Setebal defender Frederico Venancio, according to a report.

The print edition of the Sun (8 May, Goals pullout, page 15) claimed that the Whites will be rivalled by Championship clubs Reading and Derby for the 24-year-old’s signature.

The report details that the three clubs are all interested in the Portuguese ace, who is keen on making the switch to England this summer after rejecting Greek side Olympiakos.

Venancio is the captain of Portuguese club Victoria, who play in the top-flight and are 11th in the Liga NOS table.

The centre-back is an ever-present in his side and has made 30 appearances this season across all competitions, chipping in with an impressive four goals from defence.

He is a product of Victoria’s academy and has racked up 130 appearances since breaking into the first team.

Venancio was recognised by his country Portugal as a youngster and he made two appearances for their Under-21s side, but is yet to earn an international cap for the 2016 European Championship winners.

Leeds may be looking for some additional defensive recruits in the summer as Kyle Bartley is set to return to Swansea after a successful loan spell at Elland Road.

Garry Monk has used Bartley and Pontus Jansson as his preferred centre-back combination this campaign, but also has turned to Liam Cooper and Luke Ayling as back-up.

Venancio is reportedly keen to test himself in English football and Leeds could be an attractive option as they look to go for promotion next season.

Meanwhile, Derby will offer a similar path under Gary Rowwett and Reading are set to compete in the end-of-season play-offs to try get into the Premier League.
