Steven Gerrard is confident that current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp can convince the best players in European football to come and play for the club.

The 49-year-old led Liverpool to Champions League qualification in his first full season in charge of the club.

After featuring in Liverpool’s post-season friendly match against Sydney FC in Australia on Wednesday, former Liverpool skipper Gerrard spoke to the Daily Mail and expressed his confidence in Klopp’s ability to attract the best players.

“I want to play for him and I am 37 next week,” he said.

“If I’m a top player around Europe and Jurgen picks the phone up and I get offered the chance to play for this club – which is moving forward in every single department and has a world class manager leading it – I’d jump at it.

“It’s such an exciting project. Not just because we qualified for the Champions League but the whole project.

“The next three, four, five, six years, whatever it turns out to be, are going to be very exciting and players will want to be a part of what Jurgen is doing.”

The Merseyside club last played Champions League football in the 2014-15 campaign after former boss Brendan Rodgers led them to a second-placed finish in the league the season before.

Liverpool suffered a disappointment campaign the following year as they had sold Luis Suarez to Barcelona in the summer and new recruits failed to deliver the goods with Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert both enduring a poor season.

Klopp managed to bring players such as Saido Mane and Joel Matip to the club without any European football this season and both turned out to be very important additions to the squad.

The German manager has a reputation of buying players and turning them into stars as he recruited the likes of Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during his time at Borussia Dortmund and they’ve both become two of the biggest talents in European football.
