Mohamed Diame has boldly claimed that Newcastle fans as the best in the entire country.

The 29-year-old moved to St. James’ Park from Hull last summer and believes that his decision was heavily influenced by the Toon Army’s strong support

His career has also seen him turn out for West Ham, who are also known for having a very strong fan-base.

Diame didn’t exactly write his way into the Newcastle fans’ good books though, as although he was a regular feature in Rafa Benitez’s Championship winning side, his displays failed to meet the mark expected of a midfielder who was playing in such a strong team.

However that hasn’t stopped him trying to win them back over with his latest claim.

“They have amazing fans and despite being in the second league we have had 50,000 home fans every game,” said Diame, as quoted by the Newcastle Chronicle.

“It is something crazy.

“As a footballer, it’s something you want to live through every weekend.

“Even when we had a bad start they kept coming.

“They are the best fans in the UK.”

The Newcastle fans have been known for their vocal criticism of both players and managers in recent times, and Benitez hasn’t been an exception to that as at times this season it looked like the Magpies’ whole promotion bid could have been derailed.

Diame managed to play 41 times in all competitions this season, scoring six times and supplying three assists despite a below-par campaign.

Newcastle are now preparing for life back in the Premier League following a stunning last-day title win which came courtesy of Brighton dropping points at Aston Villa.

Owner Mike Ashley has recently given his full financial backing to Benitez as the controversial businessman aims to ensure that he doesn’t see his club suffer a third relegation during his time at the helm.
