Celtic are interested in signing Sunderland attacker Fabio Borini, according to a report.

The Daily Telegraph claim that the 26-year-old is available in the summer and manager Brendan Rodgers is keen on a potential deal.

It is understood that the Italian will cost just £6million due to a relegation clause that has come into play due to Sunderland’s drop from the Premier League.

The report details that the Black Cats are also set to lose Jermain Defoe on a free transfer following their relegation to the Championship as he has a similar relegation clause in his contract.

Celtic are eyeing up a swoop for the Premier League attacker and Rodgers is keen on a reunion after working with him at Liverpool.

Borini became Rodgers’ first signing at Anfield and the current Celtic boss is fully aware of his qualities.

The left winger has endured a frustrating time this season and been unable to keep Sunderland in the English top flight.

He has scored just two goals in 21 appearanes across all competitions, but his campaign has been seriously hampered by injury.

Borini missed 11 Premier League games early on in the season due to a groin injury and watched his side slip to the bottom of the table.

However, the attacker has proven himself to be steady in front of goal in previous years and has netted in both England and Italy.

His most prolific spell game with a loan at Serie A club Roma, where he managed 10 goals in just 26 appearances.

Celtic already have the likes of Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths as attacking options, but the Scottish champions will be looking to improve their squad ahead of next season.
