Michael Carrick could finally be about to join Newcastle United.

According to a report in The Sun the Manchester United midfielder is building a house in the north east with his future still uncertain.

Talk of a new contract offer from Jose Mourinho has failed to materialise but at 35 years of age he has no intention of retiring just yet.

With Newcastle promoted back to the Premier League a move to St James Park would seem ideal but Rafa Benitez has yet to discuss his transfer plans in public.

Carrick left the north east straight from school but has never hidden his admiration for the area despite spending his playing career with West Ham, Spurs and Manchester United.

With a testimonial planned for early next season it was thought that that fixture would be his farewell to Old Trafford but he may just be back again next season in the colours of Newcastle United.
