Newcastle have an option to sign Christian Atsu for £6.5m.

According to a report on ESPN the loan deal with Chelsea allows Newcastle to make the move permanent provided it is completed within a week of the season ending.

Atsu has mainly been used as a substitute this season with Rafa Benitez looking for major investment in his side to deal with moving up to the Premier League next season. A deal is also dependant on the player who may wish to return to Chelsea and consider other options.

Benitez is looking at a number of options for next season with Scot Arfield of Burnley and Fulham’s Tom Cairney already linked with moves to St James Park.

Atsu is under contract to Chelsea for another season but is unlikely to have did enough on loan at Newcastle to have advanced his prospects of promotion at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle was the fifth loan deal for the Ghanian internationalist who joined Chelsea from Porto in 2013 for a fee of £3.5m.
