Manchester United target Dries Mertens has pulled out of talks about extending his contract with Napoli.

According to a report in Metro the striker has no interest in remaining in Italy with his heart set on a move to England.

Mertens is under contract until June 2018 and is hoping to force through a summer move rather than be left in limbo next season.

The 29-year-old is in his fourth season with Napoli after leaving PSV Eindhoven and is in the best form of his career with 19 goals from 25 matches.

With a question mark over whether Zlatan Ibrahimovic will remain at Old Trafford for another season and Wayne Rooney expected to leave Jose Mourinho is in need of new attacking options.

Mertens, who was voted Belgium’s Player of the Year for 2016, is a time served striker and presents United with a cheaper alternative to going for Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid.
