Adam Armstrong believes that a long spell at Barnsley can turn him into a first team striker at Newcastle.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, the striker, who turns 20 later this week, can’t wait to get started at Oakwell.

Last season Armstrong scored 20 goals on loan at Coventry at a rate better than one every second game.

Anything close to that level is bound to have teams taking notice but it’s Rafa Benitez that the striker wants to impress.

“The loan is a massive opportunity,” he said. “Barnsley are in the Championship as well, same as Newcastle. I’m playing the same teams as they’re playing, it’s no different. The sky’s the limit and in the summer I’ll be back in Newcastle raring to go again.”

After his difficulties in bringing in players during the January transfer window discovering a ready made striker already at the club would be a massive boost for Benitez.

Armstrong certainly made a name for himself at Coventry but will find the step up to The Championship a bigger challenge.

Barnsley are currently in ninth place in The Championship, four points behind Sheffield Wednesday who are occupying the final play-off place.

On Saturday Armstrong will be looking to make his debut away to Reading.
