Manchester City are ready to do ‘whatever it takes’ to beat Manchester United to the signing of Victor Lindelof.

According to a report in The Sun, Pep Guardiola has sent out the message that City must sign the Benfica defender at all costs.

United spent most of January trying to complete a deal for the 22-year-old Swede but were unable to complete the transfer on time.

Benfica agreed a pay off to Vasteras who had a sell-on clause from the 2012 transfer and it was recently claimed that United had agreed a pre-contract agreement to sign Lindelof.

That now appears to be a first refusal with the players agent racking up interest across the continent.

City are desperate to sort out their leaky defence with Pep Guardiola dismayed by the goals that they lost at home to Monaco.

With most of the major clubs in Europe on the look out for commanding central defenders United have a big fight on their hands to land Lindelof.
