Arsenal are ready to bid for Chris Smalling as Manchester United finally prepare to complete the signing of Victor Lindelof.
According to a report in the Daily Star Arsene Wenger will make a move once the England defender slips down to fifth choice central defender at Old Trafford.
Smalling has dropped down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho and appeared to fall foul of the manager in November when certain United players were accused of lacking mental toughness.
With Linderlof expected to sign within the next seven days Smalling will be faced with even less game time or seeking a move.
The 27-year-old is in is seventh season at Old Trafford but knows that he must be playing regularly to retain a place in Gareth Southgate’s England plans.
Arsenal are short of options in central defence with the versatile Smalling able to fill in at a variety of defensive positions.
