Crystal Palace will rival West Ham for the signing of Jermain Defoe.

According to a report in The Mirror Sam Allardyce has put the Sunderland striker at the top of his wanted list.

The goals of the former England striker were largely responsible for keeping Sunderland in the Premier League last season with Allardyce keen to be reunited with Defoe.

Sunderland will do everything to retain the 34-year-old with his sale to a relegation rival the last thing that Davie Moyes needs.

Allardyce has been promised money to spend in the January transfer window and wants to add a greater goal threat to his side.

West Ham’s interest in Defoe emerged before Christmas but the chance to work alongside Allardyce again is certain to appeal to the striker.

Moyes has been told that he’ll need to sell players if he wants to spend during January but gifting Defoe to a relegation rival would be the equivalent of raising the white flag over the Stadium of Light.
