Southampton have moved quickly to snap up Sam McQueen on a new long term contract.

Liverpool were recently linked with a move for the 21-year-old whose deal was up at the end of the season.

Aware of the interest from elsewhere and that it would only require a development fee to secure his transfer Saints moved quickly to get a new four and a half year contract agreed with the kid from their academy.

After signing his contract McQueen told southamptonfc.com: “It’s indescribable. It’s quite hard to put in to words because it¹s a dream come true for me.

It’s been really special to share it with family, my girlfriend, friends and everyone else at the club because it’s like a family.”

Liverpool have a track record of signing up the best young talent at St Mary’s with Virgil van Dijk a current target.

McQueen has only made 10 first team appearances but with the reputation of the Saints Academy it wasn’t long till other clubs were taking note of his contract arrangement.

Last season he was sent out on loan to Southend but was mainly used as a substitute with today’s deal capping an incredible start to the season.
