Romelu Lukaku has claimed that there was strong interest in him from an English club last summer.

A report in The Mail picked up on an interview that the Everton striker had with a magazine in Belgium.

Last summer there was strong speculation linking Lukaku with a return to Chelsea but new Goodison boss Ronald Koeman refused to sanction a deal.

I’m not going to lie,” the striker said. “There was a specific club in England who was really keen to buy me but Everton’s new staff made me understand they didn’t want me to leave. What can you do when that happens?”

Lukaku has never shied away from his ambition to play at the very top of the game after stints at West Brom and Everton.

Koeman recently suggested that his star striker had the ability to play for Barcelona but with Everton toiling for form that comment backfired with fans questioning the loyalty of both men.

Despite Everton’s indifferent form Lukaku has scored seven times in the Premier League plus six goals for Belgium in World Cup qualifiers.

His last Premier League goals were on October 30 with a double against West Ham.
