Alex Oxlade Chamberlain was shocked to hear Arsene Wenger state that Arsenal had opened talks about a contract extension.

According to a report in The Mirror the England midfielder is in the dark about plans to extend his Emirates deal beyond June 2018.

The Ox is among a group of Arsenal players with 18 months left on their current deals.

Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have grabbed most of the headlines as they push for deals in line with the top names at Manchester United and Manchester City.

Wenger’s frustrations over speculation over those two players prompted him to mention that talks were underway with Oxlade Chamberlain and Santi Carzola.

According to the Mirror ‘Oxlade-Chamberlain is growing frustrated at not being given the chance to nail down a regular place in the starting line-up and get regular game time.’

Despite scoring six times this season the Ox has only started eleven matches with six of his Premier League appearances coming as a substitute.

Arsenal signed the 23-year-old in 2011 from Southampton in a £12m deal after less than 50 first team appearances.
