Chelsea and Everton are leading the race for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson.

According to a report in The Mail the centre-half has been watched closely since making the step up to the Premier League with ease.

Gibson, the nephew of Boro chairman Steve, has over 100 Boro appearances to his name and has been brought through the ranks at The Riverside.

If he continues to progress at the same rate it’s inevitable that he’ll leave the north-east in a big money deal.

With £100m plus up for grabs for avoiding relegation Boro will resist any attempts to sign Gibson in January unless a John Stones type offer is made.

That deal changed the entire landscape for transfers involving defenders with offers for the likes of Virgil van Dijk starting off in the £40m bracket.

In an ideal world Boro are hoping that Gibson can keep Boro in the Premier League before cashing in during the summer with a bidding war to sign the nephew of the chairman.
