He was only appointed at Aston Villa this week but new Villans boss Steve Bruce is already targeting a January swoop for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, report the Daily Mail.

The 23-year-old stopper is yet to make an appearance for the Red Devils’ first team but was back-up to Sergio Romero during David De Gea’s infamous transfer saga with Real Madrid.

Having spent eight separate loan spells way from Old Trafford already, Jose Mourinho reportedly wants Johnstone to head out on a temporary agreement yet again with David De Gea and Romero firmly established in the pecking order.

As for Aston Villa, Steve Bruce isn’t convinced with the three goalkeepers at the club’s disposal already with summer signing Pierluigi Gollini, Jed Steer and Mark Bunn reportedly not fancied by the former Birmingham City manager.

The Daily Mail’s report claims United turned down 10 separate enquiries from Football League clubs to take Johnstone on loan back in August but January might be the right time for the goalkeeper to go and seek out more first team experience.
