He signed for West Ham last year, for little over £10 million but he proved himself worth every single penny of that money and now, with a storming Euro’s behind him, it’s generally accepted that the club will struggle to hold onto him in the face of big offers. The giants of Spain – Real and Barca – appear to be sniffing, but the notion of either buying him seems somewhat fanciful even so. There are better players out there, for all his skill, and at 29 he’s not exactly young.

But this boy has proved that he can handle life in the EPL, and in London in particular. He’s got everything required to be carry on being a huge hit in England and having a major influence on any game he’s involved in. He’s stepped onto the world stage in the Euros too, convincing those who still needed it that there are great things in his game.

West Ham might not accept doubling their dough in a year, but offer them three times what they paid and that may just be enough to tempt them …
