According to reports from The Daily Mail, Manchester United have been revealed as the mystery club who launched a world-record bid for Barcelona star Neymar.

The free-scoring forward has affirmed his reputation as one of the world’s best this season by netting 21 times in 28 appearances across all competitions – including an incredible La Liga return of 16 goals and nine assists from 18 outings.

The Sun revealed yesterday afternoon that the 23-year-old’s father, Neymar Senior, told a court judge during an ongoing fraud trial that a mystery club had launched a £144.4million bid for his son’s services last summer.

They also reported that Chelsea and Manchester City had resultantly been alerted to the Brazil international’s potential availability, whilst mooting Manchester United as the likeliest candidates to prize him away from the Nou Camp.

And according to The Daily Mail, Neymar Senior has now confirmed that the Red Devils were the club who tabled a world-record bid during the summer transfer window.

He told Spanish radio station COPE; “Manchester United is the side that offered €190m for Neymar. He has still two years left on his contract but you can all be calm as my son is so happy here.”

The 69-cap international came third in last month’s Ballon d’Or award, behind team-mate Lionel Messi and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.
