According to reports from The Express, Newcastle United are in talks to sign Liverpool defender Jose Enrique on a free transfer.

The Spaniard spent four seasons at St. James’ Park before moving to Merseyside in summer 2011, registering 129 appearances across all competitions and featuring prominently as the Magpies secured an instant promotion back to the Premier League during the 2009/10 season.

The 30-year-old was a near-permanence in the starting Xi during his first two seasons at Anfield but has managed just twelve Premier League outings – none of which have come this term – since summer 2013.

Newcastle are hoping to sign a left-back before today’s 11pm deadline after seeing a move for Atletico Madrid’s Guilherme Siqueira break down last week and have also been linked with Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs.

But according to The Express, they’re currently in talks to sign Enrique on a free transfer, with Liverpool prepared to settle the final six months of his contract which expires in the summer.
