According to reports from Manchester Evening News, Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford rejected interest from Everton and Liverpool to sign for the Old Trafford outfit as a seven-year-old.

The 18-year-old was rushed into the Red Devils’ starting Xi against FC Mitdjylland yesterday evening after Anthony Martial suffered a hamstring twinge during the warm-up for the Europa League clash.

Amid an incredible debut for the Old Trafford outfit, Rashford netted twice in a 5-1 win over the Danish champions to secure United a Round of 16 clash against northwest rivals Liverpool.

That saw the prodigious striker become the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in European competitions, smashing a 52-year record previously held by the late and legendary George Best. It also means Rashford has scored for United at U18, U19, U21 and senior level this season.

But according to Manchester Evening News, Rashford’s career could have panned out very differently. Manchester City rejected the chance to sign the forward as a youngster, deeming him too small, whilst Everton and Liverpool wanted to add him to their academy ranks before he moved to Old Trafford aged seven.

Ron Jamieson, the chairman of Rashford’s boyhood club Fletcher Moss, has told Manchester Evening News; “He’s a United fan. Once they came in for him I don’t think they’d have chosen anyone else. Everton, United and Liverpool, they were all clamoring around him.

“Everton were quite keen on him, they actually swamped a particular tournament in 2005 and had Everton scouts at every single game and they were quite keen for him to go down to the training ground. But he wasn’t too keen, to be fair, and neither were his parents.”
